Process Paper:
We decided to choose this topic in order to bring light to an issue that is relatively unknown to most people in the United States. The Endangered Species act plays an important role in protecting our species and natural resources. The only way to prevent a species of life from extinction is with the help of individuals. People need to realize that taking advantage of animals will eventually have an impact on our life in the future. We both feel stronger about saving species and thought that educating the public about this crisis is the first step to making a difference.
For Cyndi Lynn’s paper, we incorporated many of her examples and quotes because they were very effective in explaining the endangered species act as well as the opinions of individuals. In addition, we extracted an example that showed how the Endangered Species Act related to the theme “Reform and Reaction.”
We decided to create a website to present the information we gathered on the Endangered Species Act. By creating a website, we were able to include all of our primary sources including cartoons, congressional records and videos. We also made our website interactive by allowing giving the reading the option of sending us feedback, comment and the user was also able to take a survey about the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act. With a website, we were able to easily incorporate parts of Cyndi’s paper.
The Endangered Species Act is certainly revolutionary since it is the first act passed by Congress that protected endangered or threatened species. In addition, this act involved the reaction of environmentalists and Congress in order to save species from extinction. For example, the Tellico Dam Project was the most common example of how individuals reacted to the actions of Congress and was they did to prevent the Endangered Species Act from being modified for the worst.
